You live in a luxury apartment in DC, one of the hippest, most happening cities in the country. In addition to its rich history and political goings-on, this metropolis is home to fine restaurants, stylish bars, indie bookstores, world-class museums, and so much more.
Perhaps that’s why tastemakers have named DC the staycation capital of the country or, at least, one of the top three. With such a varied offering here at home, it’s no wonder so many people skip the long drives and the cramped planes to instead play the tourist in their own city. If that sounds like something you might be interested in, then it’s time to start planning. Here’s a handy little guide to DC in April.
The Cherry Blossom PUB (Pop-Up Bar)
Pop-up bars have become a phenomenon across the country. They’re temporary watering holes that pop up for a few months, and then disappear as the seasons turn. By the time the average bar-hopper learns about the hottest new thing, it’s gone.
The Cherry Blossom PUB is one of DC’s most popular versions of the flash bar/restaurant. It appeared last year on 1843 7th Street NW not too far from Logan Circle, and, due to its resounding success, will make another cameo this year in the same location from now until April 29.
A Rake’s Progress
You can’t have a genuine staycation without an incredible meal. Fortunately, you’ll find no shortage of options in the DC area. One of the most interesting and exquisite is an upscale restaurant called A Rake’s Progress. The brainchild of Spike Gjerde, an award-winning chef, the place serves regional culinary treats sourced from the farms and waters of the mid-Atlantic. Whether you’re indulging in a full staycation or just spending a night on the town, this first-class restaurant won’t disappoint.
The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental
If you go home every day to luxury apartments in Washington DC, then you won’t need to book an expensive room in one of the city’s most opulent hotels—but that shouldn’t stop you from taking advantage of their amenities. If you want to live the high life without jet-setting around the world, then look no further than the Mandarin Oriental’s spa, which offers “a Zen-like ambiance” amid the hustle and bustle of the nation’s capital.
Jazz at the Smithsonian
If you want a side of culture with your fun staycation, then head over to the Smithsonian during the month of April, which happens to be Jazz Appreciation Month. Here you can catch free concerts, listen to talks, participate in workshops, and more. Basically, the month of April is your chance to soak up everything and anything related to one of America’s most celebrated art forms.
DC is full of surprises. You could live here for a lifetime and only scratch the surface of what the city has to offer. Still, the vastness of the task shouldn’t discourage you from heading out into the urban jungle and uncovering as many local gems as you can.
